Sunday 6th May – Bike ***** Bignor Hill to Slindon Folly via Bluebell wood – sunny and hot :)

Another top night up on Bignor Hill and again woke to clear blue skies. The reason the little VW campervan, which arrived last night, unloaded several large water containers became clear when at 7.30 her mates arrived and set-up a water stop for ‘X’ NRG long distance run/hike. Apparently, this water stop was 7 miles from the start and competitors had another 27 miles to go! People started arriving at approx 8.30 a mixture of runners and hikers with walking sticks. They had to log in to an electronic plate to prove they had made it to this check point, fill up with fluid before taking on Bignor Hill, rather them than us especially in this heat! Competitors were all through by 10.30 when the water stop was packed away. As yesterday we both did our exercises, had breakfast outside, read until midday and then set off on the bikes. We did Stane Street (Roman Road) again as it is fantastic and the same two lambs as yesterday were outside their field where apparently the grass is greener:) We soon whizzed down hill to 7 ways cross road and I made 25kts max, not bad for bumpy grass and I even managed to stay on the bike today! We took the 3rd turn from 7 ways, a lovely forest track which eventually climbs steeply until you reach the most amazing Bluebell wood - just as lovely as last year! We stopped to take pictures before continuing. There were signs warning of forestry work and although not working today their heavy logging machinery had left deep tracks in the road making biking interesting! You come out of the woods into farmland and then another steep climb to Slindon Folly and this year the fence has been removed and it looks so much better as we cycle past a huge pile of logs. There are several families enjoying a picnic break being watched over by a huge brown bull! We sit in the shade and have another great pasta salad while watching yet more Red Kites:) After a half an hour stop we carried on up turning right on a variety of ups and downs really hard going in the heat but very pretty non the less. We spotted a field full of dandilions and I got a shock from the electric fence while taking a photo! We had a chat to a nice family with two young boys on bikes and warned them that the path we had just come along was very muddy! We then came to Warren Barn which was very old and surrounded by fields of yellow rape, what a picture that made. Sadly, it was a long slog uphill most of the way back to the van but we made it after being out 3hrs 45mins and surprisingly only covering 7.50 miles, it certainly seemed more! Again, a quick wash down before a welcome cuppa and reading outside in the sunshine only slightly spoilt by a Rubber Dick - 10 – 4 Big Buddy – breaker breaker – we have a convoy - CB enthusiast who parked next to us with his windows open and all you could hear was static hiss as he Roger Rogered for an hour or so:( Who even thought CB radio still existed these days! We couldn’t hear it in the van so no problem :) We were treated to three deer crossing the field again when the walkers all disappeared. I think we will stay another day as its supposed to be sunny again before heading towards Poole to take Kens board back. We might take on Bignor Hill and head down to the River Arun?
